How to change the touch screen panel on the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, or 2015 Prius radio

My Dad's 2013 Prius II radio touchscreen stopped working.  He parks outside, so perhaps the heat or UV broke it.  There is a youtube video going around where the guy uses gorilla or packaging tape to try to fix it, but don't do this.  I tried is, and it didn't work, and it permanently damaged the screen by making it look weird.  Luckily I purchased this touchscreen on Amazon for about $26, and it fixed the problem: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LHKLYCM

This video is the best for getting the radio out of the car, but there's some additional hints below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Oi-Sy7MexM

Hints:

  • His video doesn't explain how to disassemble the radio once out.  It's not obvious, but it's not too bad to get the touchscreen out if you think through it and experiment with it.  First, remove the left and right brackets with an 8mm socket: 3 bolts on each side.  This is needed to get at the small silver screws.   There's 4 small silver screws you can remove which makes the front darker panel easy to slip off.  Once you remove the 4 screw, the dark front panel starts to become loose, which is good.
  • Then, to get access to the having the touchscreen loose, you'll need to undo 5 additional silver screws.  They appear to be all the same size and legnth.
  • To get the touchscreen off, you just gently pry off the touchscreen which is held on by an adhesive.  You can pry it off with your fingers.
  • You'll need to undo some ribbon cables.  They all have a plastic lever that you flip up.
  • The new touchscreen I purchased came with an adhesive.  I didn't have a good way to guarantee it lined up correctly, but I just did my best to center it, and it seemed to work out in the end.
  • When I assembled everything back in the car, I accidentally pressed the power button (for the ignition) before the shifter was connected.  That was a mistake - that resulted in the "Check Hybrid System" warning coming on once everything was fully assembled.  I unplugged the 12V battery for 15 minutes, and luckily that "Check Hybrid System" warning cleared.
  • Also, when reinstalling the trim with the cupholder back into the car, I had to separate the dark and light piece to get it back into the car.  It was easy enough to separate it, and it trivial to put it back together once back in the car.  I highly recommend you separate the two pieces before installing it back in.  Otherwise, the trim needs to bend in a weird way, perhaps in an impossible way.
